Meet Amburo

Amburo was a young bride settling into a new home in the lower Juba province in Somalia

with her husband Absame. Life was wonderful and the couple were expecting their first child. Little did she know how her life was about to change in the next 2 years. Absame was killed in a surprise attack by the Al-Shabaab.

Amburo somehow made her way to the US after a long and difficult struggle. With help from

MFS, Amburo is currently living with her young daughter in a transitional home for women. She also works in the kitchen at a local restaurant.

Wheels for Change is working with MFS in further promoting self-sufficiency with starting an urban

garden on the campus of a Detroit-area transitional home for women.

The goal is to replace the existing hedges with edible hedgerow using Hazelnuts, and espalier fruit trees. Several vegetable transplants have been planted in newly constructed raised beds.

We are also working on collaborations with groups such as the “Michigan Urban Farming Initiative”, “Global Detroit”, etc., for help with gardening supplies, transplants, making connections with other more established urban gardeners, etc.

We welcome volunteers for weekend or evening gardening, cash donations for supplies and are also looking to establish a customer base for seasonal produce.
